Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oxford University Press.
Marketing Assistant
Don't waste your time applying here. If you get lucky enough to get an interview, you'll quickly realize they only hire experienced people for entry-level roles. They seem friendly during the interview, but afterward, they'll say they hired someone already doing the job elsewhere or that they had more experienced candidates. It's an entry-level role, which means you shouldn't need experience. It makes you question why experienced people apply for low-paying entry-level jobs and why OUP is being difficult by only hiring experienced individuals. Don't bother applying to OUP. They want lots of experience and will pay below average.
- What is your understanding of OUP?
- Could you introduce yourself?
Marketing
There was a pre-submission phone call, then a phone screen with the recruiter. After that, I had an in-person interview with the director. Then there was another in-person interview with multiple team members that took place over a month. I was told I'd hear back in a week, but it took two weeks and multiple attempts to reach them. Finally, they called me late on a Friday to reject me. The feedback wasn't helpful; they said my experience was 'great' but gave vague reasons for the rejection. The questions weren't structured and didn't seem to cover the full scope of my experience.
- Tell me about a time you had to adjust how you communicate.
Marketing Executive
I applied straight to Oxford University Press with my CV and a cover letter for a job that was advertised. Not long after the closing date, they emailed me an offer for a first interview. It was about 45 minutes long, and I had a proofreading task to do after.
- Could you introduce yourself?
- What aspect of this role do you foresee being the most difficult?
- What motivates your interest in this particular position?
