& Process

The first interview was a casual chat about what I was looking for in a job, it only lasted a few minutes since we both seemed to be a good fit. We talked about my experience and preferred working hours. Then, I was asked to complete an assessment on grammar and reading, which I decided to do right away. It took me a little over 34 minutes. The manager said I'd hear back soon. The next day, I got an email confirming my acceptance and informing me about an orientation/training session that Friday. I arrived early, though some others were quite late but still seemed to get the job. I don't recommend being late or missing lectures during training as it gives a bad impression. During the training, we were told about blood tests for transmittable diseases, which needed to be submitted within a week for payment. We signed in and were paid for 2 hours, even though the session was shorter. After this, there was a week-long wait before we could start tutoring at clients' homes or libraries.

I applied online and got a call for an interview the next week. They asked me to prepare a short lesson to teach for the interview. The office manager interviewed me; she was really nice and it was pretty relaxed. I brought extra documents for my lesson. She asked if I could teach SAT/ACT stuff for more hours. After the interview, I had to take an SAT test, including the essay, to prove I could teach it.

I applied online through their website after seeing the job on my college's career site. I sent a few follow-up emails with my updated resume and to check on my status. About two months after I first applied, I got a call back. I also had a referral from someone who used to work there. The staff are really nice and polite. They called me to set up an interview pretty quickly after they showed interest. They told me part of the interview would be a short mock tutoring session, like 3-5 minutes, on a topic I choose. They gave some ideas, like explaining how to graph a linear equation. The person interviewing me was dressed in business casual and was very friendly. The interview started with my mock tutoring session. I had some printouts ready and they had a whiteboard for me. Based on what other former employees said, OTC likes presenters who are clear, creative, and enthusiastic. After my session, the interviewer asked me about my background, my college experience, why I want to tutor, my future goals, and how OTC fits into that. Then I got to ask questions about the company and what the day-to-day job is like. The interviewer answered everything well and was easy to talk to. Finally, the interviewer seemed interested and asked me to take a skills assessment to see if I was good enough to teach. The test covers math and language arts. It took me about two hours. The interviewer did say I could come back another time to take it, but I decided to do it right then. It was a good experience overall.
