Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oxford Nanopore Technologies.
Senior Scientist
First, they looked at my CV and cover letter. Then, I had a first round interview which was a panel interview where I had to talk about my past experience and if I was a good fit for the role. I don't know what happened next as I didn't move forward.
- What motivates you to apply for this position at our company?
Scientist
I was contacted by the company and invited for what was described as an informal interview/chat, but it turned out to be the actual formal interview, which was a big miscommunication. The interviewers seemed unprepared and unsure of what questions to ask, and they appeared disinterested from the start, making the experience feel very unprofessional. They also struggled to answer my questions about the role.
- Could you walk us through your background and experience?
Scientist
Had a 2-round interview process. The first round was over Zoom with the team manager and another team member. It was very technical, requiring deep knowledge of their technology. They didn't ask about my background or any behavioral questions. The interviewers were quite rude and aggressive. One seemed bored and fidgety. I felt they weren't interested in me. Unexpectedly, I got a second round invite after a week. I didn't expect an offer but went for the experience. The second round was onsite in Oxford with the team manager and other team members. It started with a 10-minute presentation of my past research, followed by more technical questions, and then a lab tour. This interview was much easier, and the interviewers were polite and engaged. The questions were less technical. I was notified by email that I was unsuccessful two weeks later. That same day, I saw the same job ad again.
