After submitting my application, I got an email to build a website using OwnLocal's site builder. The task involved answering job-related questions, like responding to sample customer emails, and creating an 'About Me' section on the website with personal info not in my application. About a day after I sent the website, they emailed to set up a phone interview. It was with two people and lasted around twenty minutes. A few days later, another email came to schedule an in-person interview at their office. This interview had seven people and was about forty-five minutes long.

I started with an online application with lots of questions to gauge culture fit. Then I got an email saying I was selected for a challenge, which was to send in answers to CS scenarios and a video explaining what OwnLocal does and why I want to work there, with a 3-day deadline. After that, I had a phone interview, and then got rejected within 7 hours. The company's emails and application make it clear they have a high opinion of themselves and want you to know it, with a lot of strict instructions and gate-keeping language. While I get they have many applicants, there are nicer ways to handle the process. It feels like a lot of hoops, some unrelated to job qualifications.

OwnLocal has a clear idea of what they're looking for. Their hiring process is pretty unique and helps them find people who vibe with their company culture. You apply online, and they'll shoot you an email to let you know if they're keen. The feedback was super direct and came back faster than I'm used to, which was a plus. I got to the phone interview stage, and it was pretty challenging, just like any other phone interview. Make sure you do your homework on the company, ask some questions, and just be yourself. Everyone was really nice, and I'd totally apply again if other roles open up at OwnLocal.
