First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Outward Bound.
Director of Marketing
started with a virtual screening with the VP of HR, then a virtual with the hiring manager. After that, there was a panel interview with the team, and then a quick face-to-face with the CEO.

Software Engineer
The interview process was reasonable but the company's lack of communication reflected poorly. I participated in three interviews--one phone screening and two in person at the New York office. Christy Borst performed my phone screening and was professional, insightful, and started the process off on the right foot. My in-person interviews were with the director of the department and associates within the department. Both times were productive and pleasant, though many of the questions were pretty abstract such as "what is your passion?" which sometimes strike me as filler questions just to justify holding three separate interviews. After my third interview, I was told that the team would be interviewing other potential candidates that week and to expect to hear back afterwards. Several weeks later, there has been no communication. I sent a follow up email to the director and was ignored. I found this all pretty ironic since I stressed that I appreciate communication in my interviews.
- Why were you interested in Outward Bound?
Wilderness Instructor
I applied online and then got a call from them where I answered some questions. After that, I went to a week long new staff training. During this training, I went on a canoe trip with other people who were also applying and two of the staff. We learned new stuff and practiced the skills they taught us. When we got back to base, we talked with the instructors who led our training and most of us were offered jobs.
- How would you respond to a specific scenario?
- What are your strategies for handling challenges within your teaching team?
Logistics
Had a phone chat, it was pretty casual. They asked about my work history and my reasons for coming back to Outward Bound as staff after having been a student before. We also talked about my logistics experience and how adaptable I am to different kinds of tasks since the job needs someone who can do a bit of everything.
- What significance does Outward Bound hold for you?
- Can you discuss your previous work experiences?
- What prompted your return to Outward Bound following your time as a student?
