So the process starts with a chat with the hiring manager, who really grills you. Then, they offer you a paid design exercise, which is work directly related to the team you'd be joining (search and discovery). They pay $500 for it, but honestly, I think they're fishing for ideas that are worth way more than that, which is just my opinion. I finished it faster than they expected and felt like I really nailed it. The recruiter ghosted me after, and even though I emailed the hiring manager after the exercise, I got a generic rejection. This was after they seemed to connect with me for over an hour in our first 1:1, which felt misleading. I'd avoid this place; it feels like a disingenuous way to get new ideas on the cheap. They've been 'hiring' for this role forever, and it seems like they just use standard templates to pay people for these exercises. They're preying on designers in this tough market.

So, there wasn't a recruiter interview to kick things off. Instead, the recruiter set me up to chat with another designer at the company. They weren't super clear about their role – like, was it the Hiring Manager or just a peer? I asked the recruiter for more details about the interview process, wondering why I wasn't having a basic chat with them first. They kinda just brushed it off with this weird ultimatum about my interest in the role. Turns out, I was actually meeting the hiring manager, who was apparently in charge of the whole hiring process and looked at every single application.
- Can you walk me through your past work experience and explain why you're interested in Outschool?
- Tell me about how you would present your portfolio.

The interview process started with a Hiring Manager Screen. This was followed by a Design Challenge, which was related to the product and included a context interview beforehand. Finally, there were multiple conversations with the product, analytics, and customer success teams, which involved reviewing the design challenge and a design critique, as well as a conversation about HR values.
