First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Otis College of Art and Design.
Executive Director
Applied via LinkedIn and had an initial HR review. Then got an email to schedule an interview. The interview had about 6 questions, not the usual strength/weakness ones, but more specific. The whole process from applying to the interview took about a week because they needed to hire someone fast. I didn't get the job because I didn't have enough experience.
- Can you tell us about yourself and your relevant work experience for this Executive Director position?
- How would you explain Otis to a parent?
- What DEIAB initiatives are you currently implementing?
Director
The interview process involved four interviews spread out over three months. The process felt inappropriate because I received a verbal offer and reassurance from individuals who would be my superiors, yet the final decision to pass was made by the hiring manager. I hold no grudges, as it's important for everyone to feel it's a good fit. Most of the staff were pleasant, although one comment about my age, relating to fishing, was out of line. The campus environment itself was perceived as cold, dark, and dreary, with a very small footprint. Despite this, the team atmosphere seemed positive and everyone appeared to be in good spirits.
- Can you provide your proposals, ideas, and contacts?
- I'm interested to see if my proposals, ideas, and contacts will be utilized.
- It will be interesting to note if they use my proposals, ideas, and contacts.
Fashion Department
I was contacted by someone from the school, we communicated via email, I filled out the application and provided a lot of specific documents. A phone interview was scheduled, then rescheduled. The rescheduled time was missed, and then they called me unexpectedly while I was at work. This happened about a month after they got my resume. During the interview, it became clear they wanted the opposite of my experience. The interviewer mentioned they liked another candidate's experience more. I'm not sure why my time was wasted, and I didn't like it.
- Could you describe your teaching philosophy?
Academic Records Specialist
I applied online and a few days later, HR gave me a call to briefly discuss the position. We then scheduled an interview for me to come in and meet with the Registrar. The Registrar seemed to be laughing during the interview, which made me want to leave, but I stayed calm.
- What is your experience with student information?
- Can you tell me about your interest in the Academic Records Specialist role and how it aligns with your career aspirations?
- How did you feel about your previous job?
