First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Opus Capital Markets Consultants.
Underwriter
The interview process kicks off with a 20-30 minute phone chat with an HR Manager from the main office. They'll chat about your job history, why you're interested in OPUS, and go over the daily grind and what's expected. If that goes well, you'll be invited for an office visit where you'll take a test. This test has three parts: first, you'll review a 'paper' loan file and answer questions about it based on the documents provided. Second, you'll input information from the same documents into the system as quickly and accurately as possible within a time limit, and then complete a timed 20-question test with math, reasoning, and equation problems that get tougher as you go. Third, you'll navigate a simulated desktop system to reach a final result with the fewest mouse clicks. After passing the test, you'll meet with the Director of the office or their Assistant. This chat is pretty laid back, basically checking if you're a good fit for the office vibe and if you can handle the guaranteed 10-12 hour days glued to the computer.
- Tell me about your work history and why you want to work at OPUS.
- Are you able to handle sitting at a desk for a very long time without taking breaks?
Director
The hiring process is pretty thorough. They require you to take a test to check your underwriting skills. The background check includes looking into your criminal history, driving record, credit history, and drug testing. The employee handbook is really long, and it took me a while to read it all and sign off on everything. They paid for my travel to the Lincolnshire office for the interview.

Collateral Risk Analyst
I had a conference call with an HR representative from Jacksonville and a manager from Lincolnshire. They were both professional. I have over 25 years in banking and housing, with 15 years directly relevant to this role, even working for competitors. The offered pay seems low, probably because the scope of work here is less than what I'm used to. I asked pointed questions, touching on some negative reviews, and the responses seemed to confirm them regarding work environment, advancement, and layoff risk. While these questions might have been too direct for an initial phone call, at my career stage, I need to screen companies. The responses weren't enough to make me stop pursuing the role; a site visit would clarify things. The manager mentioned an in-person interview would be set up, but that hasn't happened yet.
- Were there any difficult or unexpected questions?
IT Position
I saw an ad and called the company. Someone picked up and we set up an interview. It felt like it went well because they called me back for a second interview. I did that but never heard back, not even after I tried to reach out by email and voicemail. They didn't even have the decency to tell me they weren't interested. Looking back, I'm glad they didn't call back because I got a much better job where people actually communicate.
- Were there any questions that were particularly difficult?
