Product Manager
they were cool, just tested the way you think

- Why do you want to be a product manager?
Product Manager
I had an informational chat first, and then a person I knew referred me. An HR person then emailed me. They usually do a 20 minute phone screen, but I skipped that and went straight to an in-person interview with the hiring manager, who would have been my direct boss. Then I had a phone interview with a VP. After that, I was given homework to do before a full day of interviews at the office (they covered my travel and stay). The homework involved answering four questions about current company products and product vision, and also designing a product to present during the full-day interview. The full day consisted of two one-on-one interviews with an SVP and an 'architecture guy,' followed by lunch with two engineers I'd manage. The afternoon had four more one-on-ones, including one with a current PM to go over the product I designed. I didn't get the job. They told me after lunch, so I didn't finish the whole day. They said they ended it early to respect everyone's time. But because I didn't get to present my designed product, I felt it was a waste of my time. They did give very thorough feedback though, which was nice and left me with a good impression of the company.
- The first interview with the SVP was really important. He used a method called topgrading which I hadn't seen before. I found out later this is supposed to take several hours, but we only did it in one. You need to be very careful and keep a close eye on the clock because there's a reason it's supposed to take that long.

Applied online. First, a call with HR, then with the VP. I didn't do great. He told me about 3 PM roles and asked me to choose one. The call quality was bad and I didn't take notes because I thought they were just generic PM roles. Plus, the line was bad. He might have been on speakerphone, and I already mentioned I couldn't hear well. Then this other guy from Google called. He asked me to pick a PM role and talk about my experience with it. I didn't even hear the job description. My fault, I should have stopped him and asked him to repeat the roles and responsibilities. But I just kept talking without understanding the question properly. I knew it was over then. For show, he asked a few more questions, and I answered. Got rejected a few days later. Big lesson learned: if you don't understand the question, don't answer. By the way, he called at inconvenient times, and I had to rush home from work for the interview, but no excuses. Felt really bad, I prepared a lot. I had good, relevant experience too.
- Can you tell me about some product features of the software you worked on?
