First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Openreach.
Executive Assistant
I applied online and the whole thing took about two weeks, which was pretty quick. Openreach kept me in the loop the whole time. First, I did a quick online test, then I had a chat with HR, and finally, there was a last interview. I was a bit bummed with the two people I interviewed with in the final stage 'cause they spent a lot of time chatting with each other and didn't seem super focused on the interview. Also, I didn't get much time to ask my questions at the end because they seemed eager to wrap things up.
- On a scale of 1 to 10, how good are you at building relationships?
Consultant
We had to fill out an application form, complete an online situational test, and then attend an online assessment center. The assessment center had a mix of team and individual tasks, plus a one-on-one interview. The tasks mainly tested our ability to understand written information (including numbers), explain our thought process, and collaborate effectively in teams. They mentioned we could get feedback if we didn't get the job, but after being rejected, they said they couldn't provide it.
- What would you suggest we do in this scenario?
Trainee Engineer
I passed the interview where I had to record my answers. Then I was invited to an assessment day via video call. This involved 2 video interviews and a call discussing the role, benefits of working for Openreach, and what to expect. I passed the assessment centre on May 11th, 2022, but they mentioned there were no vacancies in my area at the time. It's been a long time and I haven't heard back. I keep emailing and get the same response: 'previous to the other email it still stands, there are no vacancies in your area at the moment but once we get vacancies we will be sure to call you.' I've been waiting for 16 months without any updates on when I might start.
- Why do you want to join Openreach?
Civil Engineer
It started with a initial interview that was a bit strange because there was nobody to talk to. After passing that, I went straight to an assessment day. The day kicked off with a 45-minute presentation about Openreach, which you should know if you've researched them. Then came the capabilities and suitability interview. Honestly, these interviews were different from any I've done before - very relaxed. They just asked some basic questions about my previous jobs and roles, and why I think Openreach is the right fit for me. My main advice is to really connect your answers to health and safety. Also, make sure you know what needs to be done before starting work on site, like getting a permit to dig, checking for underground services, and considering the risks to the public. I felt pretty confident about getting the job as I connected well with the two people I interviewed with. I had the interview on a Tuesday and got the job offer via email on Friday. Now I'm just waiting to start.
