OpenGov's hiring process is quite thorough and really shows in the people you'll meet. Everyone, top to bottom, cares a lot about keeping the culture strong and finding folks who align with OpenGov's mission and vision. I went through a bunch of phone interviews, then had an onsite interview day. The onsite involved giving a mock presentation and doing several one-on-one interviews. It's a great chance to meet current OpenGov employees; the leaders are really recognized in their field, and the employees' backgrounds bring tons of experience and knowledge. The recruiter kept me in the loop throughout the whole thing – communication was clear, and they made sure everyone was on the same page before moving forward. I got an agenda before and on the day of my onsite. Everyone there was super welcoming and made sure I was comfortable all day, even people not directly involved in my hiring. Honestly, it was the best interview experience I've ever had.

I had 7 video/phone interviews total since I'm living overseas. This included the Head of Recruiting, my direct manager, two peers, the VP of the department, and then the CEO. Part of the interview process included a mock presentation to a customer. I was told it required significant effort, and it did. There were some challenging questions, but I was prepared. The process was longer than usual, likely because of the distance and their careful hiring approach. Everyone I spoke with was knowledgeable and passionate about their work, the company, and its goals. A notable aspect was that I sent thank you notes after each interview and got genuine replies each time, which showed they valued my time and effort. They kept me informed throughout, giving me a good sense of the team environment.

I had a screener call with HR and then a video call with the hiring manager. The interview process was straightforward. However, both times the OpenGov representative was late and made excuses about being busy. Red flag. They also pushed the 'work from office' culture hard. While I support in-person collaboration, their approach felt like they don't trust employees and want to micromanage. Ironically, the hiring manager, who is remote, explained how important this is. For that reason, I'm out.
