First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ookla.
Data Engineer
There were 5 interviews in total. It started with HR, then three technical interviews, and finally one with the manager and some leadership. The technical interviews were mostly similar, just with different interviewers. The last technical one was more about how you'd handle requirements and design a system change. The manager/leadership interview felt a bit strange. HR was slow to respond sometimes and only revealed the salary range after the third technical interview, which could mean you're asking for too much and have already spent hours on this. Even if you make it to the end, they apparently don't give feedback and send rejections from a noreply email, which seems like a red flag.
- Questions about data structures, SQL, and your projects.
- Can you explain your experience with data structures, SQL, and your past projects?
Business Development Manager
The interview process started with a talent/recruitment manager, then a regional VP, and finally a presentation to the SVP and regional team, along with a hypothetical customer, focusing on value proposition and partnership. There were four people invited for step 3, but only two showed up. The online call was cut from 60 minutes to 30 minutes, even before the presentation began. The interviews felt pressured and rushed, like they were just trying to get them done. It seemed unprofessional and disrespectful. Approach this company with some caution.
- Present the value proposition to a customer.
HR Partner
It started with a phone screen with the Director of Recruiting, then a Zoom call with the Director of People, and finally 3 interviews with different people at the company. It sounds like a lot, but honestly, being in HR, I get why it's important. Everyone I talked to was really nice and open, so it felt more like chatting than interviewing, which I enjoyed.
- In your experience, how can we address unconscious bias in the workplace?
Software Engineer
Applied online. Then had an HR email and phone interview to see if I was a potential match. Next was a technical phone interview to test basic coding skills. Finally, there were all-day on-site interviews which included a mix of technical, logical, deductive reasoning, and behavioral questions.
- Can you design and implement the model for a basic game in C++?
- How would you manipulate a linked list in a well defined manner?
