Territory Manager
The hiring process was a bit unusual. Initially, you're hired through an agency on a one-year contract. If they're happy with your performance, they then hire you directly. I had two interviews with the agency, followed by a one-hour panel interview with four OnStar/GM managers, which seemed to go well. The main interviewer was a bit eccentric; he asked me to describe a complex sales situation I'd handled and then cut me off very quickly as I started my example, saying it was too "high level." Given I'd managed multiple sales teams totaling 200 people and was arguably overqualified, I then gave a very simple example. His response was a smug, "now see, that wasn’t so hard, was it?". The panel also requested a 30/60/90 day plan, which I submitted within 24 hours. About 3-4 days later, I checked in with the agency recruiter, who mentioned I was the only candidate they'd interviewed and expected an offer soon. However, after another week passed, my follow-ups were ignored. I've tried contacting them a few more times without any response. It was extremely unprofessional.
- Could you share an instance where you encountered an objection and how you successfully addressed it?
Software Engineer
They ask a lot of questions that start with "Describe a situation where...". This is a behavioral assessment. I found the hardest part is just remembering where I may have had those situations at some point in the past. I found this interview to be negative because they did not give me the technical portion. That means they can not hire me as a Senior Developer. It also means they can not have me come back and take the technical interview due to HR rules. I may be perfectly qualified for the position but due to a mistake on their part they cannot hire me.
- Can you describe a situation where you had to prioritize a difficult set of tasks?
Sales Manager
I was working in a different area of the OnStar call center when the opportunity to interview for the sales manager position became available. I let them know I was interested and had an interview with one of the HR representatives who explained the requirements and determined if she thought I met the requirements for the position. I also had to complete some skills and personality testing. Skills required included basic use of Word and Excel, as well as Outlook, which presented no problem. Once I made it past the testing, the final interview was with the team leader to check business chemistry, which also was great.
- Can you explain your motivation for transitioning from individual sales, which has a guaranteed bonus structure, to the sales manager role where you'd be in competition with peers for monthly bonuses?
Analyst
The interview process was pretty easy. I had behavioral and some software-specific technical questions. The people I talked to were really nice. It was just one on-site round, which I got through a staffing agency. They responded quickly and offered me the job on the second day.
