First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oncology Nursing Society.
Clinical Specialist
I applied online and had an initial HR phone interview within a week. Then, I had a second phone interview with the hiring manager and supervisor. They mentioned they'd be interviewing others for about a month and would narrow it down to their top two candidates, whom they'd fly out to Pittsburgh for an in-person interview. About a month after my second interview, they contacted me to let me know I was in the top two and would be flown to Pittsburgh for the in-person interview. They handled all my travel arrangements. They asked me to prepare a presentation and sent me the details. My travel was well-organized, and the staff at headquarters were very welcoming and accommodating. The interview began with my presentation, followed by a mix of behavioral questions and questions about my background and skills.
- Can you share your proudest accomplishment?
- How do you envision adapting to a corporate work setting?
Coordinator
I had a phone interview with a manager who talked about job duties not listed in the ad. Then, HR set up an in-person interview and had me fill out another application. The HR person was 15 minutes late. Many questions weren't related to the job. HR cut me off and made faces when I was answering a question. HR said my salary history was too high for the offered pay and asked for my minimum salary. The manager seemed nice but went off-topic about other employees' work and some complicated, error-prone software. I got a rejection email from a general mailbox saying they hired someone else. They kept advertising the job and sent another rejection two months later.
- Can you explain how to make a PowerPoint presentation?
Chief Clinical Officer
I applied online after hearing about the role through networking and an email announcement. An HR generalist reached out and scheduled a Skype screening interview with me, the HR generalist, and the CEO. We went through some standard behavioral questions that everyone got. Then, I was invited to Pittsburgh for a full day of interviews with several executives, a group lunch with more directors, and I had to give a 30-minute presentation on a topic given to me two weeks prior. The presentation went well and the staff seemed engaged. The whole thing was pretty enjoyable, and they clearly told me what to expect next at each step. They paid for my travel, which was nice. I withdrew before they made a final decision because I got another offer, but I'd still recommend this place.
- Tell me about a mistake you made, what it was, and what you learned from it.
Editorial Assistant
The questions during the interview were incredibly generic, and it was hard to apply my past experience in writing or see how it would be related to the position I was applying for. There were questions about dealing with clients and customers, which is not something that seemed to be a part of the job I was applying for. They also took longer to get back to me than they said they would, which is always frustrating.
- Tell me about a time you had to solve a problem for a customer.
