Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oliver Wyman.
Consulting
I talked to a recruiter, and we went over my background. She then set up two interviews for me: one that was resume-based and another that was case-based. After the resume interview, they canceled the case interview because of a client conflict. The recruiter then called to let me know that my experience wasn't a good match for the position. It was pretty disappointing, especially since I spent the whole previous week prepping for a case interview that didn't even happen. The whole thing felt unprofessional and left a bad impression.
- Can you tell me about your resume?
Consulting
I applied in June and heard back in July about an interview. The recruiter was supposed to set up the process but didn't follow up. I waited until late August when she said she'd call soon, but she never did. I called 4 more times and got the same response. Finally, I emailed her in early October, and she agreed to set up an interview. She cancelled and rescheduled 3 times before the interview finally happened. The interviewer seemed rushed and wasn't very polite during the market sizing case. I didn't make it past this stage.
- Can you answer a multi-part market sizing case question that takes about an hour?
Consulting
After applying online for the HK office from the UK, I got an invite to the first interview about 1.5 months later. They usually interview you in the region you're in, so mine was at 55 Baker Street, London. It was 2 interviews, each 30 minutes. The first one had general personality questions, asked why I was a good fit, and included a guesstimate question (they also called it a case study). The second interview was mostly grilling my CV and asking competency-based questions about things like leadership styles, what motivates me, and my interests on my CV. Standard questions about your experiences, so use the STAR method to prep.
- Why are you interested in consulting? What qualities do you believe are most crucial for a consultant?
- Could you estimate the annual profit of the Starbucks located across the street?
- Could you introduce yourself?
