First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Okta.
Customer Success Manager
The interview process started with an initial phone screen, followed by a phone interview with the hiring manager and other team members. It began well with a great pitch about the company being a market leader and offering great incentives like stocks/RSUs. I had done my research on Okta's investors, customers, and articles. I inquired about how to handle clients concerned about their recent breach and the Twilio/Twitter hacks involving Okta's MFA, as well as Okta's passbleed issue. It seemed I touched a nerve by asking these questions, as the team became quite snarky, defensive, and started questioning my abilities, trying to play 'gotcha'. Having been in the industry for about 10 years, I believe anyone can succeed as a CSM when things are smooth, but I wanted to understand how to navigate challenging situations when customers are upset about product issues or breaches. Following this, some team members discussed how cut-throat the environment is, particularly mentioning sales folks significantly inflating renewals by 30% for personal gain. They noted this makes a CSM's job harder when dealing with an already angry customer, especially when there's no new value being offered to justify the price increase.

Customer Success Manager
It's a standard interview process. First, a 30 min HR screen. Then, a 30 min interview with a regional manager. Next, a 30 min interview with the hiring manager. After that, a 30 min interview with the Director. Finally, a 2 hour final round with cross-panel interviews: 30 min with renewals director, 30 min with sales manager, 30 min with another Manager of customer success, and a 30 min wrap-up with the hiring manager. For senior level roles, there's a presentation.
- How would you encourage a customer to start using a cloud service?
- Tell me about your experience with identity and access management.
- What steps would you take if a customer is dealing with an outage?
Customer Success Manager
It was a long, four-round process. The first round was a screening with the recruiter. The second was a peer interview, and the third was a leadership interview. The fourth round was an on-site interview. (I actually did the first three rounds twice, but skipped the fourth round the second time). If you're applying, make sure to follow up with the recruiter via email, as I did a couple of times before getting a response. The first round is basically a feeler to see if you're engaged. After that, it's about understanding the person you're interviewing with. I didn't feel like they were focused on my technical skills, but they were really interested in how I build and maintain relationships with enterprise clients. Be ready with solid examples and be able to elaborate on your resume.
- How would you handle managing multiple deal lines and varying client needs?
