Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oklahoma State University.
Research Assistant
I reached out to my current PI, who taught the food microbiology class I took as an undergrad, to see if I could join his lab as a master's student. He initially declined but then discussed his future research plans for master's students. He was really enthusiastic about his work and explained the research concepts clearly. He was understanding when I mentioned needing financial assistance and having no prior lab experience. Thankfully, he accepted me into his lab with sponsorship.
- What research projects pique your interest?
- Do you have any prior experience in research?
Research Assistant
So I talked with the lab director and a Ph.D candidate. Mostly they asked me about my past projects. Then, they asked me about my experience with energy engineering. I also went on an industrial audit site visit with the lab crew and they asked me about that experience, like what I might have done differently.
- What are the fundamentals of thermal engineering?
- Can you explain the basics of lighting technology?
- What are the key principles of industrial processes?
Research Assistant
I approached the professor, told him about my technical skills and achievements and he was pretty impressed with the paper presentation at higher level.
- Are you willing to put in extra effort beyond the standard requirements?
