First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oklahoma City Public Schools.
Lead Teacher
There were several levels of admin involved, plus I had to submit my CV and portfolio. They also wanted a sample teaching plan and we talked about curriculum development. A hypothetical scenario about a school shooting and how to respond was part of it too, plus training on handling events.
- Can you share your teaching philosophy for primary education?
- What's your approach to curriculum development?
- How would you handle a hypothetical school shooting situation?
Client Service Technician
You sign up on their website and upload your documents, then apply. After a couple weeks, they'll email or call you for an interview. The interview had questions about the job and some standard behavioral ones. If you get the job, you sign the contract electronically on the same site. Then you go to HR for onboarding, which was kinda disorganized and didn't give much info. They sent me for a background check and a drug test, and I went to the job site the same day. It's a bit weird starting before they even have the background check results, especially since it's a school district.
- How would you find the answer to a problem you don't know how to solve immediately?
Teacher
Since I was out of state, we conducted the interview over Skype. I was asked about my previous teaching roles and how I imagined I would fit into OKCPS. I spoke with principals from a few schools around the state that were hiring, and I got responses from some of them. We didn't discuss salary because pay is set for each city and isn't up for negotiation. Orientation took place the week before we were due to start at the school. It was helpful, but not mandatory.
- How do you manage classrooms with varying reading abilities?
Coordinator
In the panel interview with the department, the interviewers asked the candidate some prepared questions. This was done to make sure everyone was evaluated the same way and to see if the candidate was qualified and a good fit.
