The hiring process involves several stages, starting with a written test, followed by psychological and physical fitness evaluations, and an agility test. There's an initial recruiter chat, but subsequent interviews only happen after completing the 6-month training academy. During the 90-day field training period, supervisors conduct periodic interviews to assess job performance.

The interview was pretty easy. I talked to a dispatch supervisor and two police officers. They told me I got the job and then I had to do a polygraph. After that, a background investigation happened. The detective really dug into me and my family, trying to twist my words to make me look like a liar. It felt like an interrogation about my whole life, which wasn't right. I'm glad I don't work there.

I submitted my online application in August 2011 and got a call for an interview in late September 2011. The interview was in early October 2011 with a three-person panel and lasted about an hour. It included standard questions from a script about my past experience, communication skills, training, and how I handle stress and difficult people. These questions were pretty straightforward, nothing tricky. About 10 days after the interview, I was told I got the job and the next steps were a polygraph, background check, and drug screening. The background investigation took almost three months and involved several interviews with the investigators. It was a long process, so applicants should be ready to wait. (I was told my background check was faster than average.)

The hiring process can take anywhere from a few weeks to over a year and a half. It really depends on things like how many people leave the patrol, the budget, any changes to the number of uniformed officers allowed, and what the state needs. You can expect to go through: PT tests, a polygraph, a written test, a medical exam, a drug test, a psychological evaluation, an interview done at home, and a long, detailed background check.
