Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Office for National Statistics.
Intern
Standard interview process, followed the expected competencies from Civil Service framework and there was nothing particularly unexpected. Any normal interview preparation on competencies and scenarios with examples would stand you in a good position.
- Can you share an example of when you demonstrated X competency?
Intern
The interview process involved one round. It was made up of a 5-minute presentation that you had about a week to prepare for, along with some standard interview questions. The interviewers were relatively recent graduates, which made the conversation feel less intimidating, and they were quite friendly.
- Why are you interested in working for the civil service?
- Could you solve a percentage calculation problem?
Placement
So, before the actual interview, there was this quick 15-minute numeracy test, which was super easy, mostly about percentage changes and ratios. The interview itself had a panel of at least two people. The first 10 minutes were all about competency questions. Then, the second part dove into macroeconomics and microeconomics to check my knowledge, basically like A-level economics questions.
- Tell me about a time you collaborated with a team to complete a task.
- Could you outline the drawbacks of inflation?
- Can you explain what quantitative easing is?
