First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Office for National Statistics.
Data Scientist
It was a behavior-based interview, and they scored my answers. They wanted concrete examples and unique stories. I was told to avoid repeating the same points and to make sure my answers were well-structured and fully addressed the question to meet the requirements.
- How would you approach learning a tool you've never used before?
Data Scientist
There was one interview that included a technical presentation and behavioural questions. The behavioural questions were based on the STAR criteria and related to the behaviours mentioned in the job description. The presentation was 5 minutes long, and the interview took up the remaining 55 minutes.
- How would you deal with teammates who disagree with you?
Data Scientist
2 panel interviews, they were very friendly. They explained the process clearly before and during the interviews. There was info online to help prep for specific behaviors and situations, like 'delivering at pace'. They gave us data ahead of time to do some analysis and then talk through our approach during the interview. It was more about how you would approach the data and problem, not necessarily about completing the analysis successfully.
- Can you share an instance where you helped develop or support your colleagues?
- How would you go about analyzing this data and approaching the problem?
- What's your thought process for tackling a data analysis problem?
