First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Octopus Deploy.
Software Engineer
Started with a recruiter screen over video call. Then a take home assessment where I had to create a small piece of functionality in C# with accompanying tests and a readme. The plan was to discuss the design with the team in the next stage. They said it should take an evening, but the recruiter suggested spending less than a week would lead to rejection. It wasn't super complicated but had lots of room for interpretation. The feedback I got was mostly nitpicks and it seemed like they didn't read my discussion of assumptions and tradeoffs. Typical for take homes, so don't expect much.
- How would you model a release retention strategy?
Product Manager
This was probably the most confusing and drawn-out interview process I've ever been through. It involved several stages with different people over many weeks, and the outcome wasn't clear. They even changed their minds towards the end. I probably spent about 5 to 6 hours on calls with them and the recruiter. The number of planned interviews kept changing as I progressed. Interviewers weren't great at managing time, and twice they had to schedule follow-up interviews to get through all their questions. This has never happened to me before, and it gave me the impression that the company might be quite chaotic based on their interview process.
- Can you describe your approach to evaluating opportunities?
Marketing Specialist
The interview process involved a 30-minute introductory call with talent acquisition, followed by a 45-minute discussion with the direct manager. Candidates were expected to review the employee handbook and familiarize themselves with standard operating procedures for different roles prior to the interviews. While initial communication was good, there was a significant delay in receiving feedback after the second interview.
- What is your experience with marketing automation software like Marketo?
- Can you tell me what makes you human?
Solutions Engineer
The interview process had 4 steps: a recruiter screening call, then an interview with 2 current team members (1 AE and 1 SE), followed by an interview with the hiring manager, and finally a technical demo and presentation. This interview structure is pretty standard for a Solutions Engineering role. The Octopus team was really responsive and helpful. They were clear about the expectations for the technical part and gave me plenty of chances to ask questions. I had two weeks to get ready for the last interview, and they asked some tough but interesting questions during the demo.
- I cannot share the specific questions asked during the interview.
