First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Ocean Tomo.
Valuation Analyst
First, there was a phone call. Then, an all-day in-person interview where I met people from different levels of the company. Lunch was included. The day concluded with a case study.
- Could you explain a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis to me?
Analyst
The interview process involved three rounds. It started with a 15-minute HR call, followed by a 30-minute interview with a manager. The super day consisted of four 30-minute interviews and a 1-hour technical session.
- Can you explain a Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis?
- Could you walk me through a case study that covers three distinct valuation methods?
Associate
It was a pretty standard process. Started with a phone interview, then I was invited to the office for a multi-hour interview where I met a bunch of people, including one of the owners. Everyone was really open and honest, and we had a good time talking. I even went to lunch with some peers, which was great. The case study wasn't too difficult. All in all, it was standard stuff with some fun thrown in.
- What makes you interested in Ocean Tomo specifically, as opposed to a larger company?
Analyst
I applied online. They reached out via email expressing interest in a phone interview. I spoke with the recruiting director for about 30 minutes and then was invited to interview at their Chicago headquarters. At HQ, I met with five people, from Analyst to Director level. They were all very nice and not expecting deep IP damages litigation knowledge, focusing instead on how I think and if I'd be a good fit. They mentioned that if you're in the interview, you're likely smart enough. The process included a case study at the end where I had to use different methods to calculate damages, which wasn't too difficult if you're comfortable with financial statements. I got the offer the next day over the phone.
