Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Oaktree Capital Management.
Analyst
The interview process had three rounds total. Each round was on Zoom with two interviewers and lasted between 30 to 50 minutes. The first round had a senior analyst and a regular analyst, the second round had VPs, and the final round had a Director. About half of each interview was dedicated to informing me about the role.
- Can you share an instance where you received negative feedback and describe your response?
Analyst
I got a timed Excel test first, which involved working with a lot of data and making sure the results were accurate and easy to read. Then, I had a regular phone call with HR where they asked the usual behavioral questions. The last part was at the Oaktree office, and it was four interviews, each lasting about an hour with one or two interviewers. I heard there's another round with senior management if I get past this first on-site.
- What makes you want to work at Oaktree?
- Can you describe what private equity is?
Analyst
So my interview process started with HR, then a phone interview, followed by two in-person interviews. I only got to the first in-person one though. There were a lot of questions about fitting in with the team's personality, plus some math and bond-related questions. It wrapped up with an Excel test that included things like v-lookup, SUMIF, and print directions.
- Could you tell me what the semi-annual payment on a bond would be with a 7% coupon?
- How would you approach an Excel test involving VLOOKUP, SUMIF, and print directions?
