Before they'd even interview me, they wanted three formal written letters of references. They also made me do research on them and put together a 20-25 minute SWOT analysis presentation. Felt like I was doing free consulting work instead of interviewing for a job. I suspect they had an internal person already, who'd obviously have an advantage knowing internal stuff compared to an external candidate who only has public info.

The process started with a telephone interview, followed by an in-person one. Then, I had to do a sample class and a follow-up interview. This is a pretty typical path for a teaching job. I had prior experience with elementary school kids, so preparing wasn't too difficult. I was also interviewing the Principal because teaching the arts needs admin support, and music can be a class where students act up. If there isn't a real talk about how the school manages discipline, it's pointless to take a job with OUSD, as behavior issues can ruin any chance of a successful program. Often, schools and principals don't support enrichment teachers, causing many problems and stress. The schools I interviewed at didn't seem realistic about classroom management and school culture.

You apply through the OUSD Job Portal. Then, the principal will call you to set up an initial interview. This interview will include at least one administrator and a committee made up of teachers and sometimes students. After that, you'll do a demo lesson where you'll prepare a 20-minute lesson to teach in a class chosen by the administrator. Because of a teacher shortage at some schools, the whole process usually takes about a week.

The principal and his interview panel make the interview process much more enjoyable and conversational than most interviews I've had before. I can tell the principal gets along really well with the teachers and other staff. The school is a continuation school so I don't believe you should apply unless you have experience dealing with many students who have domestic issues.
