Oak Ridge National Laboratory Researcher Interview Questions
& Process

I applied online and a recruiter reached out a few weeks later to set up a phone screening. It was with the recruiter and the PI, lasting about 30 min, where they asked about my background and goals for the project. Around a week later, an admin contacted me about scheduling a formal interview. This was also over teleconference, and due to the time difference, it was at inconvenient hours. First, I had to give an hour-long seminar on my previous research, which most of the interviewers attended. This was followed by about 15 minutes of Q&A. Then, I had 8 back-to-back one-on-one interviews with different researchers. These were mostly casual chats on various topics, some technical, others more personal. The entire thing took about 6 hours, which was really tiring. The final interview was with the original recruiter discussing salary and visa matters. A few days later, I got good feedback. However, they had also hired someone else and wanted me to work on a slightly less interesting topic. Even though I was willing, I couldn't accept in the end because of family reasons.

It was a full day of interviews with several researchers, staff, HR, and management. There was also an hour-long seminar where I presented my research and explained how it connected to the lab's work. This presentation included about 10 to 15 minutes for questions from the audience.

Had two phone interviews with the same person who was really upfront about the pros and cons of the position. We talked about my research and future career plans. Then I went on-site for a two-day interview, meeting lots of the team. They asked a lot about my interest in moving away from academia. It was a really nice vibe, and my talk went super well because I was prepped and practiced. They hit me with some tough questions during and after my presentation.
