First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NYS Department of Taxation.
Tax Auditor
Applied, and it took about a month to get the interview scheduled. They'll email some documents that you need to finish before you go in. The interview itself was around 30 minutes and I had 3 people interviewing me.
- In a situation with an unhappy taxpayer, how would you deal with it?
- Do you know Excel well?
- Tell me about your experience that makes you a good fit for this job.
Intern
It was pretty chill. They asked easy questions, and the interviewers were really conversational. They asked standard stuff like 'tell me about yourself'. Pay was just okay.
- What are your career aspirations for the next five years?
Tax Auditor Trainee
We did a roundtable with 5 people from different tax areas (personal, corporate, sales, excise). They asked questions about my experience with software, working with diverse people, how I'd deliver bad news about owing taxes, and my ability to travel. They also asked if I work better alone or in a team and how people would describe me.
- How important do you think a diverse workplace is?
Tax Compliance Agent
I was recommended by an aquaintance for this role. The interview process involved a panel of 5 people, including 3 managers (a senior and 2 junior ones). They asked questions based on job knowledge. Candidates were chosen from a list, which was determined by the score received on a test required for interview and job offer consideration. Most questions were job-related.
- What makes you believe you are capable of performing this job?
