First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NuStar Energy.
Internal Auditor
Had two in-person interviews, each with two people from the team. Spent about an hour in each round talking about my experience and answering general behavioral questions. HR got back to me a couple of weeks later with job offer details, plus info on pre-employment and onboarding.
- Can you describe the toughest decision you've had to make over the past six months?
Energy Manager
I had one interview. They went deep into my background with energy markets, the differences between regulated and deregulated ones, and contract negotiations. We also discussed my knowledge of where power comes from and how it's transmitted. It was a really comprehensive chat.
- When you're setting an energy price for a contract, what factors do you consider?
GIS Intern
So I had this phone interview, then went to San Antonio for another interview a few weeks later. The whole thing took about two hours. I was supposed to talk to HR first, but they were busy, so I kinda went straight into interviewing with the GIS department. Everyone in the GIS department talked to me about their daily work and how they liked their jobs, which was pretty cool and informative if you're into GIS. I also chatted with a manager from the GIS department. Then, I went into a conference room with the head of the department and four others. It was really awkward, and I'm not sure if I messed it up or if that's just how they interview. They asked questions like 'How's your attention to detail?' and then would follow up with something like 'Well do you spend too much time on details?'. It felt like a lot of trick questions. The main interviewer didn't seem engaged. After that, I went to HR, who asked me some personality questions and then looked at my resume. They told me I wouldn't be eligible for the position unless I had a minimum 3.0 GPA. Out of 30+ candidates and 15 phone interviews, only 3 of us got invited to San Antonio. I was pretty upset because no one in HR checked my GPA beforehand, and I took time off during finals to drive all the way there for an interview that felt like a waste of time and then got rejected based on my GPA.
- How is your attention to detail?
- Do you spend too much time on details?
Terminal Controller Trainee
The overall experience I've had has been very positive. The HR dept, Managers, and Director I have talked to during the process have been very professional and down to earth. I've personally had difficulty with various companies getting interviews to line up with my current employers schedule (3rd shift), and the HR dept had no problem. After making it past the phone interview, I was called in for a second interview with (within a week) a panel of managers that oversee the department. I was then called back a couple days later for an interview with the director of the department. I'm now waiting on a call to see if I get an offer.
