First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NuScale Power.
Software Developer
First, had a chat with HR which was good and I learned a lot. Then spoke with a software manager who was nice and we had a good conversation. They gave me a tech take-home test to do for the last part. The whole team interviewed me and we went over the take-home test.

Risk Engineer
Several people interviewed me at the same time. It was really easy to talk to them and they asked me a lot of technical and behavioral questions. It felt more like a casual chat than a formal interview.
- Could you describe a particular project from your resume?
Engineer
This was the most bloated and inefficient hiring process I’ve ever seen. There were 5 interviews over 3 months, with long periods of silence in-between. No clear communication, timeline, or sense of urgency, which is just what you want from a company that hasn’t built a single thing and is up against a 5 year deadline. This seemed like an incredibly inefficient company with the inability to put multiple people on an interview. Instead they make you repeat the same thing to multiple people in one on one interviews. You’d think after firing 28% of their company in 2024 they’d want to move things along to bring talent in.
- What do you consider to be your greatest strength?
- Can you tell me about a time you had a conflict with a coworker?
- What are your thoughts on the company and/or its design?

I had an initial phone interview with the OPS Manager back in early October, which went well. It took a few months, but I was eventually called for an onsite interview in mid-December. In January 2017, I followed up with NuScale regarding my application status. The whole process took about 4 months, which I felt was way too long. It seemed like filling this role wasn't a top priority for them, even though they said it was, and the position had been open for a while. I even checked their website recently and it's still listed as open. NuScale has a great design for the nuclear power industry, being a startup, but I think they're not quite mature enough yet in the industry. I'm actually glad they didn't extend an offer because I might have regretted taking it later.
- Given your previous experience in higher-level Nuclear OPS Management roles, are you prepared to step into an individual contributor position?
