First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Novacoast.
Software Engineer
It was an in-person interview where they asked about my projects, code samples, technical knowledge, and my background with the company and myself. The two engineers I met were nice and it was a fun interview overall. I made a few mistakes, but they helped me through.
- Can you explain the difference between TCP and UDP?
- Could you analyze this code snippet and tell me what it does?
Software Engineer Intern
Got contacted by a recruiter within 2 weeks of meeting them at a career fair. Had an in-person interview a few days later with a Software Engineer and the VP of Development. We started by chatting about what I knew about the company and my goals. Then we talked about my resume and projects. The technical part involved a sheet of paper with different code snippets. I had to explain what each one did. The problems covered things like important unix files (fstab), an unfamiliar database query, and a SQL join. It was pretty random stuff all on one page. I didn't know most of it and couldn't really comment specifically, which I think was where I went wrong.
- Can you elaborate on your understanding of the company and your career aspirations?
- Can you tell me about your resume and the projects you've worked on?
- Can you explain the functionality of the provided code snippets?
Software Engineer
Met some cool people at the UCSB career fair and at a talk they gave. They reached out within a few weeks. The interview was at their office in DT. I talked with the Dev VP and another employee. They had a list of questions about various technologies. My advice is don't freak out if you don't know everything on it; I barely knew half of it. They really want to see how you think through stuff you don't know. I asked for help when I got stuck and they were helpful. The interview was pretty quick. We started with me talking about myself, then I showed a project I'd been working on, and then we did the quiz. It wasn't super technical.
- Could you parse this XML code for me?
