First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Northern Virginia Magazine.
Intern
After they looked at my resume, the managing editor scheduled an interview. I met with her and another editor in person. We talked about my previous work experience, what I want to do in the future, and my interest in working there. The managing editor asked me about myself and what I read and watch in the media and entertainment world.
- Could you tell me about the magazines you regularly read?
- What aspects did you enjoy about your previous employment?
- What is your motivation for seeking a position with our organization?
Account Executive
I applied online and right away the sales manager called me about a one on one interview. Then I got an email with the date and time, contact info, and directions. I needed to bring my resume.
- Given copies of the magazine, could you present your case for why they should advertise with us?
Editor
I was emailed to set up an interview with the Fashion & Beauty editor. Then, I had a basic behavioral interview. After that, I was set up for an in-person interview with the Managing Editor. They asked basic behavioral questions, and it felt more like a chat about the magazine. I also had to do a multi-page editing test.
- Can you discuss your writing experience from when you were on the school newspaper?
- Could you tell me about the blog you started yourself?
- Tell me about your experience writing for the school newspaper and the blog you launched.
Sales
The Publisher called and wanted to do a screening. The Northern VA magazine has a pretty good reputation. However, the publisher is quite abrasive and condescending, which may explain the high turnover in sales.
- Can you make 60 cold calls in a day alongside several in-person client meetings?
