First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Northern Michigan University.
Assistant Professor
This was the first interview for a faculty job, done over Zoom after an email invitation. It was a really friendly and professional chat. The questions were straightforward, focusing on what the position requires and the challenges involved. They were open about why the position became available. Everyone I met was great.
- In what ways do you envision yourself contributing to departmental service?
Student Success Specialist
So, the first interview was a Zoom call with the Director, a Senior Success Specialist, and someone else from another department. They had a list of questions ready that were supposed to be about the job. The Director emailed me later to say I was moving on to the next round. They weren't great about sticking to their timeline though.
- What questions did they ask you?
- How relevant were the questions to the role?
Social Media Manager
It was a pretty long and involved interview process. First, you had to meet everyone on the team, then you had to do a presentation of over ten slides, followed by a test, and finally, you had a one-on-one with the Director of the department.
- What improvements could be made to our current marketing efforts?
Associate Professor
The job application and interview process at NMU is excessively lengthy and inflexible. It generally takes considerably longer than at other universities. HR mandates a strict process that academic departments cannot deviate from, which often results in our department losing potential professors to other institutions because the application and interview timeline is so drawn out.
- Could you describe your teaching and research interests?
