First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Norfolk Southern.
Mechanical Engineer
The first interview was online using Hireview. It had several prompts where I could record my answers twice. The questions asked were relevant to the job and pretty direct. The website said I needed to use at least 30 words, so that's why there are so many here.
- Regarding relocation, field work, and on-call availability, what is your stance?
- Can you describe a time you managed a dangerous situation in a prior role?
Mechanical Engineer
I applied online and then had a pre-recorded video interview, followed by a Skype interview. The first two parts were okay, though I'm not a big fan of pre-recorded video interviews. The Skype interview had two people, one a mechanical engineer and the other from HR. The HR person was distracted, often looking at their phone and leaving the computer, which was disruptive. They were also very blunt and almost rude. It was later in the day, maybe they were tired, but it wasn't a good impression for someone representing the company.
- Can you elaborate on experiences from your resume?
- Can you provide examples of your behavior in certain situations?
- Could you describe the outdoor aspects of this role?
Mechanical Engineer
The hiring process was quite long, mostly because my application was submitted 9 months before the start date, which is just how they structure things. I went through a total of 4 interviews: one 1:1 meeting, followed by two phone interviews, and then a final panel interview with three employees. All questions were behavioral, and the assessment involved reading comprehension rather than typical "what would you do if" scenarios.
- Describe a situation where you had to complete a task even though your teammates were not good collaborators.
