First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Norfolk Southern.
Intern
I met them at a career fair and gave them my resume. They texted me the next day to set up an interview. I had a super short 10-minute interview, and then had to do a 3-part online assessment. Now I'm just waiting to hear back. The interview was pretty basic, they didn't ask anything about the actual railroad, and they made it clear they'd teach me everything. I interviewed with both a worker and a recruiter. They mostly asked about how I'd handle myself in a hands-on job, like with heavy lifting or getting dirty. They also asked if I was willing to relocate, which seemed pretty important to them.
- What are your thoughts on working with older employees?
- How do you feel about being on call 24 hours and working holidays?
- What's your stance on working with heavy loads?
Intern
I applied for the internship online. After submitting my application, I had to complete an online assessment. This was followed by a phone interview where a PowerPoint was presented to me and other potential interns. Then, I was flown to Atlanta for the departmental interview. They gave me a $50 gift card to cover my expenses. During the interview, we took an exam that covered basic operations research concepts, including modeling and transportation problems. There were also questions about logic, statistics, and SQL. After the exam, there were one-on-one interviews with different people in the department. Some interviewers were engaged and paid attention to my responses, while others were busy sending emails and not listening.
- The questions required a clear grasp of OR concepts, particularly transportation problems.
Coop
So, the interview was pretty long, like 5 hours. We all met up first, you know, other candidates for different co-ops. Then there was this company overview video. After that, a personality test with a ton of questions. While we were doing that, people were getting called out for HR interviews. Then a break. If HR liked you, you got to stay for lunch. After the break, we had to do another skills test, making a schedule and seating chart based on employee needs. Then lunch. Post-lunch, I interviewed with two people from my specific department. No decisions that day, they said they'd let us know in a week. About 5 people were interviewing for 2 spots in my department. I didn't get it, but the managers told me to reach out after I finish my MBA.
- Why are you a strong fit for this role?
