I applied for a conductor job in Columbus, Ohio. A day later, I got an email inviting me to a hiring session. About 26 out of the 30 people invited showed up. We all took a 75-question test covering reading, math, mechanical stuff, and facts. From the 26, 15 of us moved on to the actual interviews, which lasted about 15 minutes. They asked me stuff from my online application and a few questions about myself. They seem to like people with outdoor work experience. It was a pretty straightforward interview with the train master and the HR lady.

Make sure you get to the interview 15+ minutes early because they lock the doors at 8am sharp and won't let anyone in after that. Also, eat breakfast or bring a snack because this day runs from about 8am to 5pm. They'll start by explaining the job and showing a video. A key point they emphasize is that this job is a total lifestyle change. They'll also mention that if you're married, your spouse needs to be 100% behind you, as this job has caused marital problems. After the job details, they'll go over the Alcohol/Drug Policy, explaining that the drug test includes both a urine and a hair follicle sample that goes back 90 days. They advise that if you're sure you'll fail the hair test, it's best to leave during the first break. After a short first break, you'll take a relatively easy test mainly involving reading and mechanics, with about an hour to an hour and a half to complete it. Then you'll have another break until a set time. Afterwards, a list of names of those who passed will be posted outside the room. If your name isn't there, you'll be sent home and can reapply or look elsewhere.

After filling out my candidate profile, I applied for conductor roles and was invited to hiring sessions. I got a call to confirm my attendance at a specific date and time. When I arrived early, we were briefed. They explained the sacrifices and challenges of the job, especially early on, and warned that failing a drug test would lead to being blacklisted. They then highlighted the perks. After a 15-minute break to consider everything, 3 out of 20 attendees didn't return. We then took an aptitude and personality test. While it was graded, the group was asked to leave for the final interview cuts. The interview was straightforward. I don't think anyone in jeans, boots, or a hat made the cut. They narrowed it down to 8 people. My interview concluded well, and I received a conditional job offer the next morning. I'm now scheduling my physical and background check.
