Sales Engineer
This was maybe the worst interview experience I've had. I saw the Sales Engineer job on Glassdoor, applied because I met the qualifications and the salary seemed okay. First, I had a phone screen where we talked about the job basics and my salary expectations. Then, I was invited for an in-person interview at their office with a Sales Manager. After that, I got invited back for a more technical interview where I met the Director of Engineering and the CEO. The CEO liked me but was concerned I might leave for Google. She asked me to come back in a few weeks with a presentation on how I'd sell their product. I put a lot of effort into the presentation, and it seemed to go well. The CEO noticed my hard work and said they'd let me know. I never heard back, even after following up a few times. About a month or two later, they reposted the job with a salary about 35% lower. It was really disappointing; I suspect they didn't actually have the budget for the original salary, which was already a bit below market. If they had just responded, I wouldn't have gone out of my way to write this. Avoid them!
- How would you market and sell our product?
Inside Sales
I was contacted directly by the CEO and we had a Phone Call to discuss my background. They asked good questions, nothing tough. This was followed by an in-person interview, which had a very casual atmosphere. The office is loud and unorganized. At first, it seemed like a great place to work, but once I got there, I noticed some shortcomings.
- Do you prefer working independently?
- Are you familiar with SF.com?
- Explain how you would plan your day considering prioritization is very important.
Software Engineer
I had an initial chat with the CTO, then a Python test problem to solve within 4 days. After that, I had a followup interview with the CTO and a dev team member to go over the Python test. The next step was an interview with the CEO, and then the offer letter came soon after.
- Be ready for very technical questions during the second interview.
- Prepare to answer all the standard (hard) interview questions when you meet with the CEO.
Inside Sales
The CEO seemed to be using our interview as a free consulting session about her competitors' sales strategies. She repeatedly avoided my questions or invitations to discuss her company and barely touched upon the role I was applying for. It felt shady and extremely unprofessional.
- Me: “Would love to hear about the successes you’ve had as a company.” Interviewer: “What do you use as a hook for your outreach?”
