First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NMBS/SNCB.
Traffic Agent
The interview had a few parts. First, I took a written test on analytical skills and logic, then a test for Dutch and French knowledge. After that, I had an oral interview with a panel of HR managers and a line manager. They asked me about my motivation, past experiences, and how I handle stress and unexpected situations. Finally, they went over the working conditions and the training process if I get selected.
- Could you share an instance where you had to handle a stressful or emergency situation?
Project Manager
Got a call with HR first, then a Teams call with my potential Manager, a Colleague and HR. After that, I had to do some personality and reasoning tests online. Finally, I got an offer and we negotiated via e-mail with some follow-up phone calls. It was a really smooth process overall, and the HR person was super responsive.
- Can you tell me what motivates you to apply for this position?
- What aspects of your background make you a strong candidate for NMBS?
Train Conductor
The interview process was very rude and aggressive, with conflicting advice from staff versus the jury. The staff advised to step back from uncooperative customers to avoid issues, but the jury then criticized this approach, saying you should always engage with the customer. There was a 2-hour info session with information already on the website, followed by a 2-hour wait if you weren't chosen first. The jury didn't even pay attention to read or pronounce names correctly, showing indifference. The tests were too long and ultimately pointless, as the info session and interview covered the same material. It felt like a waste of time and energy. Even HR mentioned that you could be rejected based on experience, even though experience wasn't a factor in the application.
- Could you please elaborate on your career and life decisions?
Train Driver Trainee
First, you have to complete two online tests before you can participate in the selection process: - Reasoning tests (abstract, numerical, and verbal) - Technical bundle (basic brakes, electricity, mechanical, safety systems, signals...) Not good = end of the road (elimination). If you pass your reasoning and technical tests (minimum 70 percent), you will be invited to a mandatory information session. Here, information will be provided about the selection procedure, the training... If you were present and still interested in continuing. No valid reason for absence or not informing = end of the road (elimination). You will receive a personality questionnaire online that you must fill out. (Not elimination). Then you will be invited for an interview with a jury: selection psychologist, jury training center in Brussels. Your motivation, behavior, questions about that bundle but even more difficult and situational questions. They check many aspects. You will receive immediate feedback, good or not good. Not good = end of the road (elimination). If the jury interview was positive, you still had to do tests. Psychological test in Brussels (elimination) Medical examination in Brussels (elimination) Psychological test = psychotechnical tests in Brussels. (Memory, reaction speed, and concentration ability) 5 test parts = 1 part not good = immediate retake. Multiple test parts bad = appeal procedure. Not good = end of the road (elimination). If all test parts are passed, an online conversation with a psychologist follows. Not good = end of the road (elimination). Medical examination: your weight and height are checked, your heart, your eyes, color blindness, your ears, blood pressure, urine, and an EKG of your heart are made. Many feel called, few are chosen.
- What is your motivation for wanting to become a train driver?
