First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Nipsco.
Budget Analyst Intern
This interview felt more like a chat than a formal grilling. They weren't trying to see if you could sell yourself. Just remember to use the STAR method for most of your answers.
- Can you tell me about a time you devised an innovative solution to a problem you faced?
Engineer
The interview is structured around the STAR method, so I'd really suggest getting comfortable with that format and thinking of a few examples beforehand. It's a roughly hour-long interview, and you'll likely be meeting with about 3-4 engineers or people from related teams.
- Can you describe a situation you encountered and your response using the STAR method?
- Walk me through an example of a project you contributed to and its outcome.
Heavy Equipment Operator
First, there was an aptitude test, followed by a phone interview with both the head of gas construction and HR. After that, a 1:1 meet and greet interview. Then, a background check which included a DOT drug screen and physical. The phone interview was the hardest part before getting hired. Once you get past the situational phone interview, it's pretty easy going for the rest. My tip is to get ready for all sorts of job scenarios before that phone interview. The background check is really thorough, they check/call all previous employers, driving records, criminal records, and even failed DOT drug screens and physicals. Be honest and upfront throughout the whole process, they'll find out if you're hiding anything. Make sure they know your top priority is everyone's safety (your own, coworkers, the public, and property).
- Tell me about a time you used teamwork to get a job done.
- Describe a situation where you felt a customer was unhappy and how you dealt with it.
- Can you give an example of a time you pleased a customer and how you could tell they were satisfied?
Fleet Mechanic
you sit down and talk with four people ,hr and four supervisors. they ask background questions and experience. then some random knowledge questions after that if they like you they have you take a 150 question test but if they don't like you they drill you on more random mechanical questions then if you cant answer them off top of your head they send you down the road.
- Can you tell me the four motions of a four-stroke engine?
- Do diesels have vacuum?
- What are the five exhaust gases that come out of a tailpipe?
