First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NEXT Trucking.
Machine Learning Engineer
The hiring process, initiated by an external recruiter, spanned about three weeks and was entirely conducted online via Zoom. It began with a meeting with an ML team member who posed basic ML and technical queries regarding data sparsity. Following this, I had two interviews, each lasting 30-45 minutes, with members from other software teams. One was a technical interview, and the other focused on high-level design concepts. Subsequently, I had brief 15-minute informal chats with the VP of Engineering and the CTO to discuss mutual expectations and responsibilities. I also used these opportunities to inquire about company culture, future plans, and reasons for choosing Next Trucking, which was a good chance to get acquainted with potential colleagues. A minor drawback was the short 48-hour offer window, which felt pressuring given it's a startup environment.
- What's a fast way to do dot products on sparse data arrays, other than a basic for loop?
- How would you design a distributed system for shortening URLs and then scale it to handle millions of requests per second?
Leadership
I had an interview with Lidia the current CEO. My experience alone with her steered me away from this Company. By her questions and responses I could tell that this Company's culture was terrible under her leadership and all the previous reviews on here confirm what I was led to believe. Also why is she interviewing people when she is being replaced by a new CEO this month? My guess is she can't let go... and should not be making these kind of decisions at this point. Do your homework.. crazy amounts of turnover under her leadership. Also my understanding is she would still remain as a board member. That was enough to make me pass on the position. I'll take my talents and efforts elsewhere. Some people are meant to lead some aren't. She needs some serious development in the leadership department. The types of questions were ridiculous and her responses were just as bad. I also watched some videos of her online talking about how she had to develop the culture of the Company and how they put a lot of time and money to create this good work culture... I smell BS. Culture is through action not by words. Good luck.
- Terrible place to work I'm guessing.
Director of Marketing
I spoke with a recruiter at NEXT in June 2020. It took several weeks to get an update, which felt like a bad sign since a quick email would have been polite, especially for this position. The interview with the recruiter felt like an interrogation and was quite confrontational. They seemed dismissive of my answers and likely didn't really grasp the company's marketing roles. If I could suggest improvements, the lack of communication and professionalism is really concerning for anyone wanting to join. I think NEXT is a cool company and I was really excited about it. But, it seems like they still have a lot of growing to do, starting with how recruiters interact with candidates.
- Can you tell me how you found out about NEXT?
- Could you please walk me through your resume?
Software Engineer
Had a quick chat with the recruiter to set up the initial phone screen. The interview was about an hour and a half with the director of product engineering. The interview itself was rather easy, focused on simple front-end questions. A red flag popped up when asking the interviewer about how the company ensures communication between teams and all he replied was that they try to hire 'chill people who are chill'. After the interview, I did not hear back from the recruiter for over a week. Sent an email to see if there was any feedback and was ignored. Pretty bad image for the company to be projecting out there towards engineers.
- Could you build a star rating widget that reacts to mouseover, similar to the Amazon one?
