Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Newsela.
Sales Development Representative
I interviewed for an SDR role. The first round was a recruiter call, it was normal and professional. The second round was with the hiring manager, it felt like a typical sales interview. They mentioned a sales roll-call part and said they'd send info, but I never got it. I still did my best without the prep. What seemed like the last step turned into another round I didn't expect. I got a call with no warning it was evaluative. I picked up thinking it was an offer or rejection, but it turned into a surprise interview with new questions. There was no heads-up this was part of the formal process. The lack of clear communication and changing expectations made me withdraw. For a sales job where clarity, process, and communication are key, this experience made me question their internal organization and how they treat candidates.
- How do you handle juggling several tasks at once?
Sales Development Representative
The interview process was really straightforward. First, the SDR Manager had a 30-minute phone screen with me. After that, I was invited to the office for an on-site interview with the inside sales team. I met with the SDR Manager, another SDR, and the National Sales Director, each for a separate 30-minute formal interview. I was upfront with Newsela about my timeline because I already had another offer that needed a response the week after my on-site with them. I was supposed to have a follow-up interview with some other key people, but because of my timeline, they were super accommodating and arranged for those team members to meet with me the same day to speed things up. I was really impressed with how smooth, professional, and flexible the whole thing was. While I was waiting between interviews, Lauren, the recruiter, kept in touch to see if I needed anything and how things were going. Everyone I met was really friendly, honest, and genuinely excited about Newsela. After my on-site, I knew for sure this was the place for me!
- Can you share any unique skills or experiences you possess that would benefit our team or this specific role?
Sales Development Representative
First, there was a 20-minute phone screen with some regular questions. Then, I had a 2-hour onsite interview where I met with 3 people from the sales team for 40 minutes. I had to talk about Newsela's mission and do a mock call. The recruiter called me the next day to set up the final 2-hour interview with 3 executives. This last one felt like a cultural fit interview and was more like a chat. After they checked my references, they called with a job offer. I really liked the whole interview experience. The talks were easy and nice, never felt like an interrogation. The recruiter was really responsive and helpful throughout. You can tell they care about their employees and the company culture, and the interview process showed that.
