Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at New York Times.
Strategy Manager
The interview process started with a recruiter screen, then I had a VP interview. The VP asked me questions about how the business should grow and evolve moving forward, and also about the competitive landscape.
- What are your thoughts on general industry questions?
- What is your outlook on the future of the industry?
- How should the business grow moving forward?
Business Strategy Manager
Got a good first call where they laid out the team roles and the overall process. Then, I had a bunch of interviews with different sub-teams to get a feel for what they do and where I might fit in. The interviewers seemed genuinely interested in what skills I wanted to build and how the day-to-day work could help me do that. A big thing to note is to be ready to talk extensively about the NYT and express your passion for journalism. The people there are really into it, though for me, it felt a little too intense.
- What is your interest in the New York Times, and which part of it do you enjoy the most, be it a specific segment, writer, or podcast?
- Can you share your favorite aspect of the New York Times, such as a particular segment, contributor, or podcast?
Strategy Director
Worst recruitment process ever - recruiter and recruitment manager treated me with total disrespect. The New York Times might seem desirable, and some people I met were smart and talented, but the HR/recruitment people treated me like dirt, called me "incompetent" after screening me and having me do 3 interviews, and then never gave the feedback they promised. Most unprofessional process I've ever seen.
- Can you elaborate on your previous experience?
