Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at New York Life.
Financial Planner
The interviewer immediately commented that I was in my bedroom and wearing regular clothes for the job interview, stating that "this is a fortune 100 company and what I am wearing is very unprofessional." I did research on the role beforehand, it is entirely commission based and relies on you networking to your friends and family, similar to a financial advisor at northwestern mutual or other such companies. Why would I put on an entire suit in the comfort of my own home for a 15 minute first interview, for a role that isn't even salary. I would suggest the company look at persons experience and skills before their appearance. If they would like to get an impression of how an individual presents themselves in a professional setting, then schedule an in person interview.

Finance
I had an on-campus interview first, and then I went to Madison Avenue for a Super day. The Super day included a lunch with executives to network with other interns, followed by interviews with four different executives who asked me questions about myself and other topics.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- What would happen to the value of a bond portfolio yielding 3.0% if the Federal Reserve increased rates to 3.2%?
Financial Planner
A Partner reached out to me on LinkedIn when I was looking for a new job. We had a quick phone chat first. Then I went to their office for an initial interview to learn more about the position. I liked what I heard, so I went for a second interview, which focused on their sales strategies and how to build a client base.
- What is your primary motivation?
