Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene.
Project Manager
So, I was already working for the health department, which gave me some inside scoop, but everyone, even internal folks, goes through the same process for city jobs. No special treatment, just fairness. The first interview is always a phone call with the hiring manager, not HR. It's mainly to discuss the role, confirm your interest, and answer job-related questions. They might touch on your experience a bit, but the deep dives happen later. After that call, I had a Microsoft Teams interview with the team (the hiring manager plus two others). It was an hour long. They introduced themselves and then took turns asking questions. They had to finish up with other candidates. Luckily, I got the offer! The hiring manager sent the offer letter, not HR. It was a bit weird that the other team members were CC'ed since salaries are public, but it felt unnecessary. Once I signed and sent it back, it went to HR. After a week or two, HR contacted me for more info on the application portal. The city's hiring process is super slow, so seriously, don't quit your current job until you have a confirmed start date.
- Can you share an instance where you faced competing project deadlines and describe your approach to managing them?
- What is your understanding of health equity?
- Could you explain your method for organizing your tasks and responsibilities?
Program Assistant
It was smooth. They did one phone interview and then a zoom interview. You'll hear back about an offer within two weeks. After that, you just need to finish your onboarding paperwork. Very straightforward
- What makes you want to join this company?
IT Project Manager
Had a phone interview first. Then, two in-person interviews. The first in-person was a panel interview with three people. The second was with higher management. Heard back about the decision within a week. HR was inefficient, so the onboarding process was long.
- Can you tell me about your past experiences?
- Where do you see yourself in five years?
