First, I had a chat with the recruiter, then I talked to the Director. They decided to move forward with me, so I had a few more interviews: two with managers and another one with two engineers.

A recruiter reached out for a 30 minute screen, covering basic experience, working style, and management approach. It was friendly and prompt. Next was a brief Meet & Greet with the hiring manager, a low-key chat over tea about experience and digging into specific challenges and resolutions. Follow-up was quick, within 24 hours, to proceed, and then scheduling. I got the interviewers' names beforehand, which was great for research. The in-person was about 5 hours, with 45-60 minute sessions with direct reports, peers, the hiring manager, and the recruiter. No panel interviews, just max two people at a time. Interviewers were prepped with specific agenda items. I had 5-15 minutes at the end of each session for my questions, though some were naturally covered during our conversations.

I met with the Director of Engineering at a coffee shop close to their office. It was a very informal chat. He jotted down a few things as we talked and asked thoughtful follow-up questions to everything I said, but it felt like a genuine conversation about my career where he was really interested. I thought it was going well, so when we wrapped up, I asked about the next steps. He let me know they wouldn't be moving forward with my application.

  • Could you share a story about a team member you managed?
