I interviewed for this role a while back, but it turned out not to be the right fit for me. However, the lead experience designer was really helpful and supportive of my job search. They even helped me connect with other opportunities, which ultimately led me to a position I was happy with.

It was a two-round interview. The first round was with the associate director and some seniors. In the second round, I chatted with the founder and head director. The people were nice and really seemed to care about my unique thinking process for solutions.

I got referred by someone I knew and they put me in touch with a recruiter. After that, I had a technical phone interview with an engineer from New Deal. Then, I went to their office for an in-person interview. This included a technical interview with a senior mechanical engineer, then a soft skills interview with HR, and another technical interview with the chief engineer. The last step was a quick chat with the CEO. I didn't accept the offer because it was clear mechanical engineers were not highly valued there; they seemed to be treated like robots expected to just make industrial designs manufacturable. They emphasized they didn't want someone with their own ideas, just someone who would do exactly as told, which might explain why most engineers seemed young and new. Plus, there was no remote work option. I felt like I'd be treated like a kid and didn't want to join. It might be a decent place for a junior engineer to gain experience by working long hours and following instructions, but I've already done that.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

The interview started with me being asked what I knew about the company, and then the interviewer introduced the role and what the company does. He then asked about my relevant projects similar to the role requirements. He asked deep technical questions about the battery I used and how many parts I designed in the project. He also inquired about the functionality and the design measures I implemented to safeguard the equipment from leakage. I requested him to check my portfolio on LinkedIn, and he asked me to explain one of the projects in detail. The interview went over 50 mins. Towards the end, he abruptly ended the interview, stating he had a lot of meetings and didn't have lunch, which was quite surprising given the length of the interview. I'm glad I saw his temperament before potentially joining.
