I went for an onsite interview for a Java developer role in 2011. I got an unofficial offer, but it was low, under 100K. The recruiter said I was weak in SQL, which might be true but there was only one SQL question, so I didn't think it was a fair assessment. I think they were trying to lowball me. They wanted me for a second round. I was supposed to meet the manager but they said he had a meeting. When I asked to meet him the second time, they said he left abruptly. The recruiter finally told me he left. I don't know why they didn't tell me that earlier. Honesty is important to me, so I passed.

Behavioral Other

The interview process was pretty basic. I waited about 5 minutes for someone at the front desk to get a visitor's pass, and security apologized. He called the interviewers, and they seemed pretty casual. We chatted about the new building and the colorful paint on the way to the conference room. They asked cookie-cutter questions and gave a subtle 'thank you' in response. Each question was generic, and the whole thing lasted maybe 20 minutes. They mentioned they'd be in touch for 6 months, so nothing was guaranteed.

It was a half-hour phone interview. We talked about my past work and the tasks I completed. The interviewer seemed knowledgeable. They asked about the models I've worked on, how I evaluate them, and how I interpret their results. Strangely, they also asked about the ETL process. They asked what I'd do before building a regression model, but I overthought it and didn't give the answer they were likely looking for, probably about checking normal distribution.

I had a nice chat with the recruiter and we set up a phone interview. During the call, we went over their questions and I asked mine too. Then, I went to their office to meet with some people I'd be working with. I spoke with three Directors and two Managers. They mostly asked me situational questions about my past experiences. Each meeting lasted about 20 minutes and they were all back-to-back so I could get it all done in one visit. I got the offer pretty fast after that.
