First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NetLogic Microsystems.
Applications Engineer
I applied to this company online. A few days later, they invited me for a short onsite interview. I made sure everything on my resume was solid and focused on the requirements listed for the position. However, that still wasn't enough to answer some unexpected questions. I'd advise future candidates to pay attention not just to the basics but also to practical skills related to the job they're applying for.
- Regarding variable scope, how can you maintain a variable in memory after its parent function has concluded?
- In the context of your project, explain the processor's operation through the MIPS five-step pipeline.
Verification Engineer
HR initially called me and mentioned the group director would review my resume for fit. Then the director called and we talked on the phone. He was satisfied so HR called me in for an onsite. It was about 5.5 hours long, I talked to 5 people, and it was all technical. A couple of days later, the director called me in to discuss the role, asked some technical questions, and explained the group's work. Three days after that, HR called me in with an offer.
- Can you write some black box RTL in Verilog?
- Could you explain the complete verification cycle for testing a specific block?
Design Engineer
It started with a quick phone screen to go over my resume. Then, there was a small group of interviews. I had four 45-minute one-on-one sessions with technical team members and the manager. They asked about my past work and also technical stuff like RTL coding for state machines, timing analysis, and CPU pipelining/stalls. They also asked about blocking vs. non-blocking assignments in Verilog RTL. The team was friendly, and the vibe was pretty relaxed and comfy. It took about two weeks for them to get back to me after the interviews; I sent an email to check in and found out I wasn't selected.
- Could you draw a state diagram and provide the Verilog RTL code for a soda vending machine, including functionality for counting money, dispensing a drink, and providing change?
- Describe the four fundamental phases of a CPU pipeline, explain its operation, identify potential slowdowns, and discuss solutions for these issues.
Senior Software Engineer
The interview wasn't too difficult. The manager wanted to see if I could write a C code, like inserting a linked list. Then, an engineer reviewed my resume and gave me a C test. I had to read C code and explain what it did. Be ready for C code questions like finding out if the machine is big endian or little endian. Reversing a linked list is also a common question.
- The interview questions were not very surprising.
