Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NerdWallet.
Content Writer
I applied via the NerdWallet site and then had the first interview. I'm autistic and sometimes my speech can be a bit rough and I was anxious before this one. It's hard to know when to tell companies about this. Their online form doesn't have a spot for it. Should I just start the interview and bring it up then? I know some of my answers were not great. But my work history and portfolio show I'm really good at what I do. Still, the first impression is often based on a 30-minute chat and some standard tests for neurotypical people. They said they'd let me know in 2 days, but I got a generic rejection email 3 weeks later saying I could reapply. Not likely.
- Tell me about your career experience.
Content Strategist
I sent in my resume and had a 30-minute call with a recruiter. A day or two later, they asked me to create a detailed strategy deck about their business. I offered to share examples of my past work or hypothetical outlines, but I'm not comfortable doing free consulting work. I decided to withdraw from the process because the homework assignment felt too early, especially since I hadn't even spoken with anyone on the actual team yet. I believe interviewing should be a mutual process, and the timing of such requests is key to attracting talent rather than discouraging people.
- How would you create a content strategy to repurpose existing website content?
Copywriter
The interviewer was super nice and asked me about my writing background. They also wanted to know about how I handle conflicts and if I can work on my own. A big part of it was about writing long pieces and how I research and explain tough topics in different kinds of articles.
- Can you share an instance of a workplace disagreement and how you resolved it?
- Could you provide examples of articles you've authored that required extensive investigation and research?
