Software Engineer
The interview process moved pretty quickly, and nothing was super technical, but the behavioral interview really exposed some issues. When I asked about work-life balance and how they treat interns, both the head of engineering and the CEO asked me if I was looking to work a lot of hours. They seem to pride themselves on hiring top talent, but it feels like they mainly judge people based on how many hours they work and how much code they produce, rather than the quality of the work or efforts to prevent burnout. I heard from one manager that he missed his daughter's birthday because he had to interview someone, which is pretty wild.
- Can you explain how to find neighbors in a graph, specifically for a marketing team's needs?
- How would you create an algorithm to find neighbors within a graph structure?
Software Engineer
There were 2 rounds in the interview process. The first round consisted of an easy technical question. The second round was a behavioral interview that lasted quite a while, with 3 interviewers each taking 45 minutes to an hour.
- How do your peers typically describe your contributions when working on a group project?
- Describe your approach to scaling up a server.
Software Engineer
An engineering manager reached out and we had an intro call. Then I had three rounds that were mostly technical interviews. After that, I interviewed with the CEO. They then asked for references to make an offer. I withdrew before they could make an offer because of a few red flags: it's the middle of a pandemic and everyone was in the office, plus they assumed I'd interview in person. Out of dozens of companies I've interviewed with recently, they were the only ones considering in-person interviews. They had 17 engineers, most with less than 3 years experience and started as interns, so minimal outside industry experience. Only one person on LinkedIn seemed to have worked at a tech company outside Utah. I lacked confidence I'd be working with experienced engineers and wasn't ready to be the one to train everyone. I got the vibe they wanted passionate people who prioritize work over life. They also weren't open to remote work, even during the pandemic.
- How would you demonstrate to someone else how to solve a problem?
