First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at NC Department of Health and Human Services.
Microbiology Laboratory Specialist
The hiring manager contacted me about a month after I applied. I interviewed with a panel of 3 people, and it was a really positive experience; they were all very friendly and personable. They didn't ask a ton of behavioral questions, but they really dug into my experience and what I knew how to do. About two weeks later, they requested references, and then a background check. It took them another two weeks to get back to me with a decision. For a government place, that felt pretty reasonable.
- Can you tell me about your experience with specific test systems like PCR, AST, MALDI, and staining?
- How do you manage stress when working in a demanding environment?
- Describe your process for learning a new test system that you haven't used before.
Analyst
The interview was only 1 hour long. They then said they would have a second round of interviews (and gave me the impression that I would be in the second round, a friend interviewed for the same position and they did not mention this to her). However, I had to email 2 weeks later for a check up and they changed their minds about doing a second interview. It took them 2 months before I found out they filled the position. They did not notify the interviewees personally, you have to check the status on the website. It takes a while because they have to go through HR for approval, it is harder for a state employee to move up than it is for an outsider to get a job. I would not recommend anyone that is looking for a career to work for the state. But, If you are looking for a job than this is the place to work.
- Can you tell me about your weaknesses?
Income Maintenance Caseworker
I had an interview back in 2019. It felt pretty long for a job that didn't pay much. First, there was a phone interview, then a panel interview right after, and then a typing exam immediately following that. I had a feeling they'd offer me the job, but the salary was surprisingly low given my experience. After the interview, one of the employees pulled me aside and asked why I wanted to work there. I told them my reasons and asked if they liked their job, to which they replied "no". I withdrew my application as soon as I got home.
- How would you handle a situation with an angry client?
Epidemiologist
After getting selected from the online application, I traveled from New Jersey to North Carolina for the interview. I was interviewed by a panel of three experts: an epidemiologist, a cosmetologist, and a public health expert. I was prepared for the interview and dressed in a blue suit with a white shirt and black shoes. Most of the questions were related to environmental health. I provided direct and simple answers with examples, but unfortunately, I did not get the job. It was still a nice experience.
- All questions were work-related and were answered with confidence.
